Healthier Choices for Salad Dressings

If you’re like most people, you love to pour rich, creamy dressing all over the vegetables in your salad.  And while you may think you’re eating healthier because you’re eating your veggies, the salad dressing may be weighing you down more than you realize.

Salad dressings, while tasty, are often full of fat and calories that you don’t need when you’re trying to slim down and get healthy.  But there are alternatives that are healthier for your body yet still delicious.

One option is to mix olive oil or flaxseed oil with red wine or balsamic vinegar.  You need one part oil to one part vinegar.  You may also want to salt and pepper it before shaking to mix the two ingredients together.

While olive oil and flaxseed oil have fat and calories, they are a healthy source of fat that your body needs.  In fact, flaxseed oil is used by so many organs of your body that it’s almost impossible for it to be converted into fat cells.

Another way to dress up your salad without adding extra fat is to squeeze a little lemon juice on your salad.  It gives it a tart sweetness that many dieters enjoy.

You can also choose bottled dressings that are vinaigrette style and have fewer calories and fat grams.  However, steer clear of low-fat and non-fat dressings.  While they may be lower in fat, they often have just as many (if not more) calories.  Why? Because to replace the flavor from fat, dressing manufacturers often load the bottle with sugar!

Finally, if you simply can’t go without your favorite salad dressing, you can try a method of eating it that won’t add as many fat grams to your day.  Instead of pouring dressing all over your salad, put the dressing on the side.

Dip the tines of your fork in the dressing before putting the veggies on it.  You’ll get a little dressing with each bite, but you won’t use nearly the same amount as if you pour it all over the salad.  In fact, you’ll be surprised at the great flavor and the small amount of dressing you actually need to feel satisfied.

Your Guide to Low-Carb Cooking

Interested in trying your hand at the ever-popular low carb diets? Want to get started but aren’t sure if this is really what you want to do? You can always try making some low carb dishes for a couple of weeks to see if it’s a diet you think you can stick to.

On a low-carb diet, you eat fewer carbohydrates in your diet. If you’re borderline diabetic (or full-fledged diabetic), then a low-carb diet can help you keep your blood sugar levels stabilized, and it also helps you lose weight in the process.

Breakfast meals are usually the hardest on a low carb diet because many people like to have their donuts, muffins and toast - but these are found to be high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates turn into sugar within your body and then your energy crashes, sending you on a hunt for more food.

Some alternative breakfast options for you to try instead consist of low-carb muffins, low-carb cold cereals and hot flax cereal. Even eggs are an option! There are many recipes for low carb muffins and cold cereals like Special K now have specially marked boxes for their low carb varieties.

Some of your favorite recipes call for potatoes, which are also high in carbohydrates. One option you could consider trying instead of potatoes is cauliflower. It sounds a bit odd when you hear it, but it’s actually quite similar to a real spud if you mash it up and prepare it as you would any other low-fat version of mashed potatoes.

If you’re a dessert lover, there’s no need to give up desserts on a low-carb diet. There’s a low-carb recipe for almost any dessert you can think of - including strawberry shortcake, cheesecake, brownies, Bundt cakes and even pies!

Some people love to eat rice. The white rice that’s normally used in our favorite dishes is high in carbohydrates. If you use brown rice instead of the white, you’ll be eating fewer carbs - and eating healthier too.

Eating out at restaurants, it can be difficult to discern what’s high in carbs and what’s low. Many restaurants have low-carb menu sections, but if they don’t, just try to steer clear of the foods you know are laden with carbs – and load up on healthy proteins instead.

Low-carb diets are a safe way to lose weight, but you have to remember not to overdo it. You will still need to have some carbohydrates in your diet – low carb is very different from no carb.  By trying to cut out all carbs, you’ll only succeed in putting yourself in an unhealthy state.

Healthier Ingredients for Your Favorite Dishes

Making the switch to start eating healthier foods isn’t an easy transition to make. Most people want to eat healthier, but dread the prospect of letting go of their favorite dishes. It’s almost like losing a good friend for some people.

It is possible to have both and be happy. You can still enjoy some of those favorite melt-in-your-mouth dishes. All you need to do is to replace some of the more fattening ingredients with healthier alternatives and you have yourself a healthy dish! The dishes will still taste good. Here are some examples of ways you can make your favorite dishes healthier by substituting certain ingredients:

Bacon - A lot of our favorite recipes have bacon in them. You can still use bacon, but try a healthier version of it. Turkey bacon is healthier for you and most people like the taste of it. Another option is to use fake bacon since it has fewer fat grams and calories.

Eggs - Eggs are in numerous recipes – from pancakes to quiches and desserts! Too many eggs isn’t considered healthy for you. An alternative would be to try using egg substitute products or even egg whites instead of the egg in its entirety.

Flour - Try using whole wheat flour instead of the usual bleached white flour. Whole wheat flour is very healthy for you and it can add a little extra something to your favorite dishes. Whole wheat noodles are better for you too if you’re a pasta junkie.

Olive Oil - Olive oil is a healthier option you can use to cook your food than the normal oil and lard we use or that our food is cooked in at a restaurant. Use it as a substitute in your dishes in place of the corn oils. A few less calories add up to increased weight loss!

Chicken - Use chicken in your dishes, but makes sure to take the skin off. This is the unhealthiest part of the chicken. Chicken can be a great protein for you, but only when it’s without the skin.

Cocoa - Using cocoa instead of real chocolate for some dishes will be a healthier choice to make. It also gives you more control of what amount of sugar you want to place within the dish.

Honey - Sometimes honey can be used in place of sugar in your favorite recipes. It still gives you that sweet taste, but it’s better for your body. Of course you can also use artificial sweeteners if you like, but they don’t help you like honey does and some people don’t like the taste of them.

Eat healthier, but don’t give up all of your favorite dishes before you find out if there are healthier alternative ingredients you can use instead of some of the unhealthier ones that you normally put in your recipes.

Keep Your Willpower Intact When Ordering Takeout

If you’re the average person on a diet, then you’ve experienced times where you fall off the diet wagon and succumb to the many temptations in your daily life. It’s all too easy to be tempted by advertisements of the juicy hamburgers so perfectly put together and just waiting for you to order them.

Unfortunately, those ads can sabotage us when we’re trying to stick to our diets. One effective advertisement and you can cost yourself too many calories or fat for the day, but more important is the mental damage it does when you decide to give up your whole diet just because you had one bad day.

It may seem like the only answer to this situation is to stay away from fast food and not watch television commercials for the rest of your life, but that’s not realistic.  There are some other ways to keep your willpower intact when you do go to places that have tempting images of diet-killing foods.

What you see isn’t really what you get - Keep this in mind. How often have we seen the image of the perfectly thick hamburger and ordered it - only to find that what you get is a smashed up mess? The temptation is in the perfection. Think not of the image, but what it will really look like when you get it. Most of the temptation will be gone.

Get it your way - Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want or don’t want. If you decide you need a burger, then order it with no cheese or mayo as an open-faced sandwich. A regular hamburger can satisfy your hunger and will have less fat.

Use drive-throughs - Many times, you plan ahead what you’re going to order, but then you’re hit with large, tempting images on the menus inside the restaurant. Drive through menus have some images, but not as many - and it’s easier to divert your eyes away from the board if you already know what you want to order.

Drive throughs are also helpful when the smell of the fries boiling in oil tempts you to order the biggest size available. When you go through the drive through, the smell isn’t as apparent as it is inside.

Deliveries - If a restaurant delivers, use it to your advantage. You can plan what you want and order it without having to go to the establishment to see all of the tempting pictures on the wall. If they don’t deliver, ask someone else to go get your food for you.

Sometimes paying a little extra money to someone for doing you a favor can keep you from falling off the diet wagon. Let’s face it, temptations are out there and are noticed more readily by those who are on a diet. Take steps to prepare yourself for those situations ahead of time.

Tips for Healthy Children’s Menus

Eating out with children can be a frustrating experience for any parent. Most will take the easy way out and choose the kid friendly fast food places that offer the processed foods kids like.

Unfortunately, most of those foods are fattening choices that hold little nutritional value for their growing bodies. Children can be a handful at restaurants and they can be finicky eaters as well, but you can make their meals healthier and more nutritious.

If you must go to a fast food restaurant, try to avoid the kid’s meals unless they offer healthy substitutes like fruit instead of fries. They usually contain fattening foods like chicken nuggets and fries.

If they want the double cheeseburger, downsize it to a junior burger and don’t let them add all of the mayonnaise and fried bacon so that you can eliminate some unnecessary fat while keeping their diet more in the nutritious range.

Take the meal to a park (or to your home) to avoid having them be tempted by seeing what other kids are eating. Sometimes parents give in to their children’s demands and buy fattening fries just to avoid the embarrassing tantrums they can throw in the restaurant.

Many restaurants where you sit down to eat have healthier menu options.  If your child is rambunctious, go to one where the kids can color on their menu.  Or play games with them until the food comes, like, “ I see something that starts with the letter A” - and let them have fun trying to guess what it is.

This helps encourage them to eat healthier choices for their meals because they don’t develop a reliance on drive-through fare.  Try to make compromises on their food choices.

See if they’ll go for toast with jam instead of the fattening pastry treats they usually like to have. A little extra sugar-free jam on whole grain toast is still better than a sugar-laden donut.

Children can eat healthy if you try some unique ways to sway their choices from the non-nutritional items they’ve grown accustomed to ordering.  Be persistent but flexible as your child navigates a new way of eating healthy.

A Guide to Eating Healthy at a Restaurant

Eating out at a restaurant is a pleasurable experience as far as getting waited on and enjoying the relaxing atmosphere. But the other side to it is that it can wind up being more fattening than just enjoying a meal at home.

There’s nothing wrong with letting a restaurant cook for you - as long as you do some thinking ahead and special requesting when you order. Here are some tips to keep in mind for a healthier meal out.

Choose a healthier restaurant - Try going to the places that advertise healthier menu choices.  Some restaurants have special sections on their menus specifically for low calorie or low fat food choices. Don’t be afraid to speak up and request something off the menu.

Dressing on the side - Salads are healthy choices, but some places put too much dressing on their salads, which can cost you unnecessary calories and fat. Simply order the dressing to come on the side and you can control the amount that goes on to your salad.

Choose places that cook with olive oil - Most restaurants will cook with fattening butter, because it’s less expensive for them than healthier olive oil. Don’t be afraid to ask whether a restaurant uses butter or olive oil to cook with – and request that your meal be prepared without lard or butter.

Omit items - If you just have to have that juicy burger, consider ordering it without the cheese, bacon or mayonnaise (or even the bun)!  Sometimes, omitting the cheese alone can save you as much as 25g of fat.

Avoid Buffets - The foods that you see in the buffets are ones the restaurants can easily make in bulk. These usually turn out to be fattening fried foods or pasta dishes. If you think you can easily steer clear of the fattening items and stick with healthier salads and foods, then go ahead and enjoy the buffet!

There’s nothing wrong with eating out once in awhile as long as you don’t overdo it. Don’t just watch what you order, but consider the size of the portions, too.  Ask for a to go box right when your food comes and put half of the food in it for you to eat as leftovers the next day.

Facts about fast food

In this day and age, convenience has become our friend. With busy lives and careers that take up a good chunk of our days, fast food restaurants are seen as an easy way to get dinner on the table.

Who has time to slave over a hot stove making a meal for the family when you work an 8-10 hour day?  Although the convenience of fast food restaurants is definitely appealing, they’re not the best choices for nutritious meals. Let’s explore some facts about the fast food meals you might order for your family’s dinner:

McDonald’s - Juicy hamburgers with a side of fries sound delicious. But if you take a regular Double Quarter Pound Cheeseburger with a side of medium sized fries, you’ll see that you’re consuming approximately 60g of fat and 1,100 calories total for the fries and the cheeseburger (not to mention whatever you wash it down with). If you’re on a 2,000 calorie diet, you would have met over half of that with only one meal.

Kentucky Fried Chicken - Their chicken is a popular choice for a quick and easy meal. But one original recipe chicken breast is approximately 21g of fat and 360 calories. If you have 2 chicken breasts from one of their popular family bucket meals, you’re looking at 42g of fat and 720 calories. This doesn’t include any side dishes that might come with the meal, such as mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, or potato wedges.

Pizza Hut Pizza – It’s so easy to come home exhausted and fall prey to the convenience of pizza delivery. A Large Pepperoni pan pizza has about 14g of total fat and 270 total calories per slice.

If you eat 2 slices of that pizza, you will have consumed around 28g of fat and about 540 calories total. Add extra cheese or other toppings and you’ll cost yourself even more fat and calories.

Subway – You think you’re eating healthy, but it depends on what menu item you choose. A 6” Chicken Parmesan sandwich is approximately 18g of fat and around 500 calories. This doesn’t include any sides. If you add more sauce to your sandwich, you’ll need to figure more calories into the equation.

It’s best to steer clear of fast food eateries, but if you’re forced to go to one for convenience, try to scout out the menu ahead of time on the Internet to find out what menu options they have that won’t blow your diet plan for the entire day.

Tips to Avoid Television Eating Habits

In the evening hours, television has become the primary means of entertainment for many.  According to Nielsen ratings, the average household watches about 54 hours of television a week.  Most of this programming is watched in the evening.
Unfortunately, because of this diversion, unhealthy eating habits have formed. Snacking in front of the television is becoming a favorite past time for us. The snacks you choose are usually easy to prepare and taste great, but are bad for your waistline.
Potato chips are one of the more popular options that people snack on while watching their favorite shows. While they’re easy to eat, they also come in many flavors and different textures.  Ice cream is another example of a popular TV snack for the same reason.
What is it that drives us to scarf down snacks during our favorite programs?  For some, it’s a bad habit that’s developed over time.  For others, it may be a temptation brought on by the endless amount of commercials that promote the snacks you crave.
Regrettably, too much snacking and sitting will eventually turn into an expanded waistline.  How can this be prevented?  If you feel the need to munch on something, try to opt for a healthier choice.  But even a healthy snack can be pointless if you consume too much in one sitting.
The biggest problem with snacking in front of the television is that you’re easily distracted from the bag of chips or tub of ice cream in front of you and before you know it, most of it’s in your belly.  Try to keep your snack to a sensible portion, such as a small bowl.
Low-level exercise is a great alternative to useless snacking.  Walk on that treadmill! Ride that exercise bike! Or get on that elliptical! It only takes about half hour to get the benefits from it.  Not only are you distracted from exercising, but your attention is diverted from food.
You could also try to limit the amount of time you spend watching television. Spend quality time with your family by playing games or engaging in a hobby that everyone can enjoy.  Or you could just sit back and read a good book.

Moderation is key, in both time spent watching television and snacking in front of it.  Keeping yourself under control will help keep any bad habits from forming and will help you maintain a manageable waistline.

Avoid Midnight Snacks

12:30 A.M.  You look at the clock and decide to head to the fridge for a little snack.  Satisfied, you return to bed until morning.  Sound familiar?  If so, then you’re one of millions who are guilty of this simple indulgence.

Breaking yourself of the habit of midnight snacking can be difficult to do, but it CAN be done. It’ll take some persistence and patience to achieve your goal.  Depending on how severe your cravings are, it can take as little as two weeks, or up to two months to control them.

This longing for food in the wee hours of the night may be brought on by hunger, not habit.  If hunger is your problem, you may not be eating enough during the day.  Either you’re eating too few meals during the day or you’re not eating enough calories to sustain your body through the night.

One way to restrain yourself from late night munching is to eat several smaller meals during the day. In doing this, you get the calories you need and your stomach isn’t empty.  It’s also healthier to eat this way than to eat a few big meals during the day.

Eating a large dinner will delay digestion and hinder your sleep.  Eating a high-carbohydrate snack at bedtime, such as fruit or crackers, can help you sleep better and keep your stomach at rest until morning.

You might also try a glass of warm milk.  Not only does it help you relax, but also it’ll help you feel full.  Try to avoid drinking alcohol in the evening hours.  While having a nightcap may help ease and calm you, it intensifies your appetite and adds needless calories to your diet.

Don’t drink beverages with a high amount of caffeine.  These can hamper a good night’s sleep.  If you wake up in the middle of the night and your stomach needs a little something, try drinking water instead.

Sometimes water can satisfy a midnight craving.  If this doesn’t work, try to read a book, or listen to some soothing music to help get you back to sleep.  In time, you’ll be able to sleep soundly without being disrupted.  You may not see results overnight, but your perseverance will pay off.

Relationship Woes and Eating Don’t Mix

Each of us has had a good relationship end when we didn’t want it to.  Or maybe you’re just going through a rough patch in a marriage.  Where do some turn to obscure their sorrows over this pain?  Food!

Unfortunately, food tends to become your friend when you need a shoulder to cry on or just need a comforting sensation.  Food can become the crutch you lean on for steadfast support during a turbulent time.

Although it’s normal for some to turn to food for comfort, it’s not always a healthy option - physically or mentally. When a relationship faces hardship, or is terminated, the only help food will bring is the extra weight that’s gained while we wallow in our sorrow.

There are healthier choices to consider turning to because of a tumultuous relationship.  Lean on one of your friends for support.  Being with good friends can help boost your self-confidence as well as keeping your mind off of what’s in the fridge.

Try doing something fun, if you want to be alone. Go shopping to find something special that you’ve always wanted or, perhaps, get a makeover to feel better about yourself. Anything that can help you build confidence will help you get over the chaotic emotions you’re feeling.

You could also try a new hobby or resume one you’ve been putting off for so long.  You could join a local sports or fitness squad.  Keeping busy in body and mind helps you to ignore the unfortunate events that have ensued.

If the temptation for food is too strong for you to resist, make sure that you keep some healthy foods or snacks in your home. Stay away from chips, candy, cookies and ice cream that are beckoning you. Have low fat, sugar free or low calorie items on hand to alleviate any craving.

Everyone knows what it’s like to lament over a lost relationship or a bad marriage.  Using an abundance of food to cope with this heartache may be an effective short-term fix, but it won’t satisfy your feelings (or your health) in the long-term.

Successful Diet Plans

There are gazillion ways in the internet and on television shows that tell of successful diet plans. True enough. The problem often is that what works for a group of people may not work for another, but more on that later.

The Human Factor
Most diet programs will tell you to stick to the diet program and given a few weeks you would have lost so much weight. Ideally that works. The truth is the temptation to exceed the required calories is sometimes too strong to resist that there are occasions when the person ends up indulging more than the prescribed caloric count. When that happens (and often it does) the person doing the weight loss program end up feeling guilty and thinks that the program is over for them. If ever, they would repeat the same procedure from the start. Wrong. We are people. Just like anybody else, we fall to temptation. When we do and if we do, all it takes is to jump to the saddle again with resolve. If we fall again, saddle up again. The weight gained previously by a little indulgence often does not add up much if the resolve is there.

The Quick Fixes
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is not. Yet it is everywhere. What makes it tempting is that work is out of the equation. The truth is that does not work that way. Juices, concoctions, pills, tablets, preparation, exotic fruits etc. that reduces several pounds of body weight in a few weeks or days are not just true. Hunger suppressant maybe, but when the body cries out for the nutrient that it needs, the weight kicks back with a vengeance.

Again there are drugs advertised to make the body slim, fast. These are often very expensive against the benefit that the person gets. The most proven drug that blocks calorie from getting into the system of the body is still Orlistat. However, you do it with exercise and diet to get the most benefit which is at best modest. Since Orlistat is the only drug that have proven definitely (in conjunction with other weight loss activity) to reduce calorie in the diet, any claim beyond that is still under study at best. To make the diet work for you, exercise must accompany the program. Besides, there is really nothing better than sweating it out.

Exercisers
The old-fashioned running and brisk walking are tired exercise methods that always work. The exercisers sold on TV may work and if you are convinced of the gadget remember only that the models selling them did not trim their body on those exercisers.

Different people have different metabolic rates. There are also other hidden causes that may hinder the affectivity of the weight loss program subscribed. The best way to do this (almost everybody know this although not always adhered to) is to check with your physician first. Get a confirmation whether  the alternative diet, exercise programs, weight reducing methods, etc. will work well for you or at least will not conflict with your current health status and age. Because often, testimonies are good and true, but they always provide generic approaches and solutions. So take your health into your hands. Successful diet plans are those that you can realistically follow. No matter how agreeable the methods are, check it out with the doctor first. You may belong to a different class with a different set of dieting needs.

Healthy Foods to Diet

The truth of the matter is that all foods are health foods. The variety of foods that are available has their purpose and uses. The food that grows in one region is a balanced food for that region and is not superior to those that grow in another which is also the food that is very appropriate for that region. Everything is where it should be. No amount of hype and sales pitch could change that, and no matter the try, people will remain healthy if people eat in variety and in correct proportions without gorging.

Health foods however is a term used by health proponents in the 1920's to foods that have special benefits to specific health issues. Health foods for example are those foods that are low in sugar and fat since these are the primary causes of obesity when left unchecked.
What are these?

Organic Foods
These are foods farmed as organic in nature. Organic foods for most of human history had been the staple in farming. These are foods farmed without the use of pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides. For livestock, organic classification mean that the animals were not injected with antibiotics, are not genetically modified nor growth hormones used in raising them. Today, there are two basic kinds of farming of organic food. One is the private garden which will also sell their produce labeled as organic, the other are organic food industries regulated heavily by most governments.

Natural Foods
Natural foods are health foods that are similar in ideal to organic foods although these foods are processed without the use of refined sugar, food coloring, refined flour, and flavorings.

High Fiber Foods
High fiber foods are health foods that have high fiber density. Examples of high fiber foods are berries, cabbages, and fruits and vegetables that have high fiber concentration. The thing that is so important with foods that are high in fiber is that it improves the absorption of nutrients in the body as it cleanses the digestive system. A clean colon and healthy colon for example prohibits 64 different kinds of diseases that would otherwise afflict the body when the gunk and the junk in the system are not flushed out.

Omega 3 rich foods

Unlike foods that are low fat and low sugar, foods rich in Omega 3 are good sources of essential fatty acids whose benefits are too numerous to name. Some of the benefits of foods rich in omega 3 are that it has excellent anti aging qualities, is a good cancer retardant, good for heart problems, skin, hair, metabolism, rheumatism, good for the memory and brain health, etc. What is good about these foods is that it is everywhere and is not expensive. Examples of foods are, Avocado, berries, soya beans and soybean oil, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, olive oil, Brazil nuts, tofu etc.

Vegetables like, broccoli, squash, kidney beans, green beans, lettuce, cauliflowers are very rich in Omega 3. Likewise fish especially the cold water/fatty variety are excellent sources of Omega 3. Some of the fish are the trout, swordfish, milkfish, salmon, mackerel, herring, and Albacore tuna.

Health foods are everywhere. Those mention here are just a few of the examples but mostly the healthiest and among the best. Dieting through health foods is as easy as picking the next choice.

Dieting To Gain Weight

Being underweight poses several problems to health. In a world where being fashionable is synonymous to being thin the danger of malnutrition, physical defects, a weakened immune system, mental disease and other diseases that could lead to death is very real. The only recourse to get the body back to the track of proper nutrition is to gain weight back the earlier the better. Remaining to be underweight could make the person develop repulsion to food that will form complications that will be difficult to treat later on.

Aside from the usual problems that accompanies malnourishment, physical activities let alone exercises to tone the muscles will never take place. Now there are only a few major pathways to good health. Two of these are proper nutrition and exercise. When that is not done, other complications follow.

In general though, malnourishment is not the only cause for being underweight. A person could be skinny but remain very healthy but if genes are not the cause, the following may be reason for you to have a check with your doctor so that a program to gain weight or a program of treatment is done.

Malfunctioning digestive organs- There are several causes for this that should be consulted with a physician. Upfront, the following will help.

Fruits and Vegetables - Fruits and vegetables contain digestive enzymes that aid digestion and the absorption of nutrients. Aside from that, this food group contains fiber that cleans the digestive tract down to the colon. Choose fruits and vegetables with very high fiber content. When the digestive system is clean, many illnesses in the body are prevented. When fruits and vegetables are not enough, there are drinks and concoctions that offer fiber to reinforce that which is lacking. Drink vegetable juices where fiber is generally higher. If you cannot do that yet freshly squeezed fruit juices are a good way to start.

Yogurt – Contains good bacteria that help digestion. When there is more harmful than good bacteria in the digestive tract, health problems occur.

Aloe Vera – Eat food preparations that have Aloe Vera. This plant helps soften stool and facilitates easier flushing of the junk in the system.

Water – Drink plenty of it.

Anorexia Nervosa – This is a psychiatric illness that needs immediate attention. Anorexia nervosa is voluntary starvation caused mainly because there is a fear to gain weight.

Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome – Although rare, this gastrointestinal disorder is life threatening. This is characterized by compression of the duodenum in the digestive tract.

Depressive disorders and anxiety – While psychological in nature and treatment, the disorder are basically caused by thoughts that are negative in nature that influences moods and behavior but leads to more serious health problems. Check with your physician.

Other causes of lack of appetite are  tuberculosis, cancer treatment, type 1 diabetes, drug use and the use of stimulants and inflammatory bowel diseases to name a few. The treatment varies and the difficulty of treatment varies. No matter, affliction is the more reason to find ways at gaining weight through proper dieting and nutrition.

Usually though, if the main reason for being underweight is not caused by poverty, the reason is self induced and voluntary. Both are sad while the latter has the latitude of choice. Choose health. Gain weight. Get the proper diet

Dieting To Lose Weight

Dieting to lose weight is just as hard or as easy as changing the habit. One way to look at this is to see how the habit formed. Habits do not take place overnight. It is an accumulation of little things done over a course of time until the effect sets in.

Likewise, dieting to be really effective has to be gradual. So for now, stay off the crash dieting, fast reducing and fast fat burning menus, pills and concoctions. It may guarantee to reduce your weight but not your nutrition and well-being. True there are specific foods and food preparations that benefits particular health and weight issues. True also that fast reducing concoctions and food preparations are prepared not to really make you enjoy the simple pleasures of life like a good meal but for you to endure it. It is so easy to agree that there are hard rules to observe in order to lose weight fast without suffering and insure good nutrition in the process too. It is so politically correct to mention that all the so-called weight-reducing products do wonders for the body. Being politically correct though is not being honest.

The fact is everyone has claims, but nothing is officially proven in the entire area of dieting to lose weight. Not one fast weight loss program is endorsed by a credible health organization. The best that is said is that a certain product is under study, is under weighty consideration, or is still waiting laboratory confirmation. Until then, stay off it but here are things that you can do to regain your ideal weight while being kind to your body in the process.

Decide now
Make small changes in your attitude to food. The little changes you make now will spell a lot of weight and nutrition problems later. Look at it as an investment. Treat it as a way of loving yourself. It is like this. If we want for example to prepare for retirement, we start saving early. The earlier we start the better and the longer the lead-time we have to save. The more we save the better we enjoy. Likewise, reducing the amount of food that we eat today, no matter how small the portions are, when done overtime will ultimately be the difference between being obese or fit. It will spell the difference between being healthy or ill and between being fashionable or waddling in oversized clothes. Changing the eating habit cannot be put off for long because the longer it takes for a person to take resolve, the harder the effort to make the resolve becomes.

Eat well
Every food has its purpose. Food in any region did not just happen. It is there for the people to enjoy and to take the right and balanced nourishment. It is the choices, the preferences, and the current activity that limits the nourishment provided to the body. So eat well. Get nutrition from all the six food groups and do it regularly. The main reason that there is too much noise regarding overweight is not because there is fat, sodium, and sugar in the meal. It is because today, 150 million people are obese because they eat more than three times the required daily intake of fat and calories.

Fast Weight Loss Tips That Work.

Fast Weight Loss Tips

Are you interested in losing weight?   If you are, are you in a hurry to do so? While it is advised that you do not rely heavily on fast weight loss, also commonly referred to as rapid weight loss, there are many individuals who do.  If you are interested in losing weight, as quickly as possible, you will want to continue reading on.

One of the many ways that you can go about achieving a fat weight loss or rapid weight loss is by reducing the foods that you eat. When reducing your food consumption, it is important that you only reduce your consumption a little bit.  Unfortunately, many individuals who want to achieve fast weight loss think that they need to stop eating altogether, even if it is for two or three days.  That is something that you do not want to do.  Once you resume eating again, you will likely gain all of your weight back, almost automatically.  It is also important to mention that starving yourself is dangerous to your health.

In conjunction with reducing your food intake, it is advised that you reduce the amount of sweets or junk food that you eat. For fast weight loss, you will want to completely eliminate junk food from your diet, even if it is only for a short period of time. This means that if you want a snack, you should grab an apple or an orange instead of a chocolate bar or a bag of chips. With candy and other sweets being high in calories, you may see a significant decrease in your calorie consumption by eliminating them from your diet.

Exercise is another way that you can go about achieving fast weight loss. The thing about using exercise to achieve fast weight loss is that it is a little bit tricky. With exercise, you may not notice a significant weight loss right away.  For instance, it typically takes most people at least a week or two to notice an improvement in their appearance with the use of exercise. With that in mind, the more overweight you are, the sooner you may see a decrease in your weight, often quickly.

In keeping with exercise to lose weight, exercise is important to losing weight, as it helps to limit your calorie intake.  When you burn off calories, with the use of exercise, your body absorbs less calories. This is what makes it possible for you to lose weight.  Although your first though may be to start exercising as much as possible, right away, you may want to refrain from doing so.  If you aren’t usually physically active, it is best to start out slow.  This should significantly reduce your risk of injuries.

Another one of the many ways that you may be able to achieve fasts weight loss or rapid weight loss is with the use of a cleanse.  These cleanses are commonly referred to as colon cleanses or weight loss cleanses.  Cleanses work by removing toxins and extra weight, actually waste, from your body.  It has been said that most individuals have at least seven or eight pounds of waste stored in their bodies.  A weight loss cleanse or a colon cleanse should help remove those toxins from your body.

Should you decide to try a colon cleanse or a weight loss cleanse, to help you achieve a fast weight loss, it is important that you read all directions given to you. Some cleanses have a strict diet that you must follow. For the fastest weight loss, you may want to examine liquid cleanses, instead of those in pill formats, as they often produce the quickest results.

The above mentioned fast weight loss tips may help you achieve fast weight loss, even if it is only a small weight loss. As a reminder, it is important to proceed with caution. While it is more that possible for you to achieve your fast weight loss goal, it can also be dangerous to you and your health.

How to Avoid Gaining Weight When You Quit Smoking

A lot of smokers go through bouts of wanting to quit, but they fear the possible weight gain that may occur. Gaining weight can lead to a whole other set of health problems.  Those who fear gaining weight abandon their thoughts of quitting their smoking habit.

They feel it’s easier for them to continue smoking than to lose unwanted pounds.  In order to discuss ways to keep from gaining weight, we need to evaluate the reasons why people gain the extra pounds when they quit smoking in the first place.

First and foremost, nicotine is an appetite suppressant and a stimulant.  Your metabolism increases slightly when you smoke.  Once you quit, your metabolism decreases and your hunger increases.

Also, when stress levels are high for smokers, lighting up a cigarette to calm one’s nerves is typical. For those who quit smoking, they find other ways to relieve the stress, such as eating.
When a smoker decides to quit, cravings are a common occurrence.

To pacify these cravings, food is usually the substitute.  High calorie, high sugar foods such as candy are most often the replacement as it’s quick to get, quick to eat and quick to give you that little buzz.

However, the calories add up, the metabolism is slowed and, sadly, weight is gained. To keep from gaining weight when you’ve decided to quit is to counteract the behaviors that cause you to gain weight in the first place.

If a craving comes on, go for a long walk or listen to relaxing music.  Read a book or start a low stress project to keep your mind occupied.  Whatever you do, keep busy. When an overactive appetite becomes a problem after you quit smoking then consider snacking on healthier foods.

Have carrot sticks instead of potato chips or dried fruit instead of cookies.  Low calorie/sugar free snacks have come a long way and, in some cases, are just as good as their junk food counterparts.

Healthier choices for snacks will stop the scale from reading higher than you want it to.  Sometimes weight gain becomes inevitable for a smoker who recently quit. If you start an exercise regimen right away, you can avoid gaining more weight and it can help lose the few pounds that have crept up since you quit smoking.

Drink lots of water in between meals to help fill you up so you won’t feel too much of an urge to eat tempting foods.  Smoking can be a habit of the past without replacing it with tons of food. Eating sensibly, keeping busy and exercise will help you quit smoking and keep those extra pounds off.  A strong mind will produce a strong body.

How to Bounce Back When a Diet Fails

How often have you embarked on your new diet program only to quit after being on it for a few days or weeks just because you couldn’t resist temptation for your favorite treats?  You make that mistake and feel that you haven’t only failed your diet, but failed yourself as well.

Although this is a common feeling that any human would go through, it’s not a reason to quit your diet altogether. There’s the old saying - “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” This holds true for your diet as well.

Small setbacks in your diet are to be expected. There’s a difference between a setback and giving into your temptations in moderation.  Unfortunately, quite a few people have let that failure become a reflection of who they are. You can bounce back from this way of thinking when your diet fails you.

It’s not easy, but if you’re passionate about your weight loss goal, then you can do it. If you fail on your diet, pick yourself up and brush yourself off. Analyze what set you back and decide ways that you can prevent it from happening again.

Gain some support from those around you. Friends are usually more than willing to come to your rescue when temptations become too overwhelming for you. They can also be that shoulder to cry on when you succumbed to a temptation.

Analyze the diet program you’re currently on. Maybe this one just isn’t right for you. Check out other options and see if maybe they’ll work better. Or, maybe you don’t need an official diet at all – but a dose of healthy eating education so that you can make smart choices most of the time.

Read some success stories from other people who have dieted and succeeded in gaining their weight loss goal. The Internet is chock full of them. Maybe all you need is a little inspiration and a proof that it can actually work for you if you just keep moving forward with it.

Diet failures happen all the time. You’re not the first person it’s happened to and you won’t be the last person, either. Keep your goal written down if you need to and have it placed prominently where you can always see it.

Make sure you reward yourself for being a better eater and working toward your fitness goals.  It’s important to celebrate the small successes and stop focusing on insignificant setbacks.

Healthier Ways to Satisfy Your Hunger

One of the most annoying (and embarrassing) things we endure in life is a loud grumbling stomach in a nice, quiet environment. Everyone knows it’s you, so it doesn’t do any good to try to hide it. Your stomach is going to mumble and grumble no matter where you are or what you’re doing if it’s hungry.

What do you usually reach for when your stomach starts to growl?  More than likely it’s one of the quick choices that everyone makes - you grab for the bag of chips, the candy bar or even those jelly filled donuts. These items will fill your stomach but they’ll also fill your thighs, abdomen and stomach with fat!

Rest assured, these aren’t the only foods that can satisfy your hunger. There are healthier choices out there that will fill up your stomach but not make you gain a few extra pounds. Here are some options you can try reaching for instead:

1.) Instead of the bag of potato chips, how about trying a bag of dried fruit? Fruit is good for you. Dried fruit is something that you can take with you in your car and keep in your purse and it won’t spoil right away.

2.) Candy bars are nice ways to take a bite out of your hunger, but it’s full of calories. If you’re on a limited caloric intake each day, a candy bar will eat up most of those allotted calories, leaving you with little left for the rest of the day. Instead of biting a candy bar, how about trying some of those low-fat, low-calorie granola bars? You’ll satisfy your hunger, stick to your diet and give your body some needed nutrients as well.

3.) Almost everyone likes a good chocolate chip cookie (or 2 or 3 or possibly more) when they’re hungry. Again, they taste good, but they can pack on the calories. Instead of those tasty cookies, how about going for rice cakes or low-fat, sugar-free cookies to squash your hunger?

4.) What about those jelly-filled donuts or other popular pastries? They’re good for taste (and a quick sugar high) but not good for your waistline. Maybe you can consider some sugar free Fig Newton’s instead. They don’t have as much fat as the pastries and they can satisfy your fruit craving that you may be suffering from when you reach for the jelly-filled donuts.

There are many more options out there to reach for the next time your stomach is grumbling and causing all eyes to be on you. Take healthy snacks along with you so that you can stay satisfied at any time of day.

Popular Dieting Plans you might be interested with.

If you’ve looked for easy ways to diet, then you’ve probably checked out some of the more popular fad diets advertised to people who need to lose weight. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most popular ones - how they work and what their effectiveness really is.

One popular diet fad most people have heard about is the Atkins Diet. This diet works on the theory that if you consume a lower amount of carbohydrates, you’ll lose a large amount of weight in less time than most other diets.

This diet is reportedly able to give you some positive results, but the nutritional value of the foods it recommends to have while you’re on this diet doesn’t meet what’s really known as healthy. You must make the choice to sacrifice nutritional health along with the weight.

Another fad you may have noticed is the Medifast diet. This diet revolves around drinking shakes and eating things like soup. Whether the products that you can get shipped to your home truly have all of the protein and nutrients you need remains to be seen. This diet is quite high in cost, but you do get a couple of weeks’ worth of meals.

Then there’s the Nutri-System diet. Their quick and convenient pre-packaged meals come in many different dishes, which is what sets it apart from most of the diet programs out there – choice and variety! It may be effective, but so is good, old-fashioned, fresh, healthy food - and it’s cheaper.

South Beach Diet is another pre-packaged meal program offered to those who want to lose weight. This program is much like the Atkins Diet, where low carbohydrate intake seems to be the key to losing a ton of weight fast. These meals can be found in your local grocery aisles, so you don’t have to order them and have them shipped to your house.

Then we come to the ever popular Slim-Fast. Why do some of these programs insist on putting “fast” in the name of their products? To sell better, of course. This product comes in powder form that you can add to skim milk to make weight loss shakes.

These only skim the list of the many diet fads out there today. Be sure to check with your doctor before embarking on one of these diet adventures. Make sure it’s healthy for you before you take a chance and possibly risk your health. More important, educate yourself about eating a healthy and balanced diet and don’t rely on any one system that tries to guarantee a quick and easy way out.

Common Dieting Myths Revealed

You may have wanted to start a diet many times in the past, only to shy away from it because of some of the things you’ve heard or the self-doubt you have to succeed. There are many myths about dieting, and hopefully, we’ll dispel them today!

The number one myth people fall prey to is that you can lose weight fast by eliminating as many calories as possible from your diet or by starving yourself. This is an extremely unhealthy way to go about it because your body goes into starvation mode, shutting down as much weight loss as possible.  Some people only want to lose weight fast because they have an outfit they want to fit into for a special occasion coming up next week. Don’t wait until the last minute to start a diet.

Another myth we face in our quest for a slimmer waistline is the one that tells us to only eat a certain type of food all day, every day. Grapefruit, pepper-laden water, and even hot dog diet fads have resulted in many binges over the years. Following dangerous fad diets means your body’s not getting the necessary nutrients it needs to fight off illnesses and stay healthy.

You may have also heard that you can never stray from your diet. If you do, you’ll need to exercise for hours to make up for it. This isn’t true. It’s okay to have that fudge brownie once in awhile. You only need to adjust your calorie intake for the day. There’s really no need to exercise for hours just to compensate for one little treat.

One myth you may hear is the one that says you can’t eat before you go to bed, because you’ll get fat in your sleep. This one isn’t true because a diet only means that you’re eating healthy and watching your caloric intake for the day. Having a light snack before bed isn’t going to make a big difference unless it’s a 7-course meal or a full gallon of Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia.

How about the one that says you can’t eat anything between meals? It’s better that you do eat snacks. Eat smaller meals throughout the day to keep your hunger satisfied. By eliminating snacks between meals, you’re only going to make yourself hungrier at meal times, which cause you to eat a lot more than you really need just to satisfy your hunger.

There’s another myth that says you shouldn’t consume any dairy products at all because they’re too fattening. Dairy contains nutrients your body needs, so you should have some dairy – n fact, some studies suggest those who consume, have better weight loss success! Just make sure you limit your amounts and go for the low-fat versions.

Try not to fall victim to the myriad of diet myths circulating the ‘net. A healthy balance of proper eating (most of the time) and exercise can work wonders for your diet success!
